History

ALP Candidate for the seat of Buderim, Laura Hawkins provides a healthy mix of practical experience and youth. She has formally begun her campaign to win a seat in the Queensland Parliament at the March 21 Queensland State election. Laura is one of 5 women to be contesting a seat for the Labor Party on the Sunshine Coast. She has a strong commitment to continuing the legacy of recent State Labor Governments ‘The Bligh Government has a very proud record of achievement both locally and across Queensland. I want to contribute to the success of our Labor Government. I want to ensure Buderim has a strong voice in Parliament.’ ‘The Global Financial Situation is rapidly declining and we need an experienced Government with a plan to protect OUR jobs, OUR homes and OUR futures!’ Laura owns and operates a successful small business and is an award winning hairdresser. She also has a keen interest in Health and Fitness which inspired her to study to become a Specialised Personal Trainer. Her proudest achievement though, is being a mother to her 2 year old son Leverett. ‘I am amazed by the journey of Parenthood daily and know that family is so important that it needs to be protected’ Laura has also taken an active role in the local community since moving to Mountain Creek four years ago. Laura is involved with the Glenfields Neighbourhood Watch and Community Association, including holding several key positions on its executive. Currently she is the Secretary and writes the Glenfields newsletter distributed to approximately 950 households. Her efforts in the community were recognised on Australia Day 2009 when Laura was a finalist in the Sunshine Coast Regional Council ‘Young Citizen of the Year Awards’ in recognition for her ongoing work for the community. This is not the first accolaide Laura has received, she was also awarded Miss Cessnock City in 2003 for her outstanding dedication to the community. ‘My Year as Miss Cessnock opened my eyes so much more to the diversity of need across the community, my parents always showed me that “if you can, you should DO” and so I have invested my passion and my time into giving back to the community that I care so much about’ Laura reflected. The unique perspectives that Laura will provide to the diverse Buderim electorate aim to ensure that the unique challenges its citizens face are represented in State Parliament. Laura represents the strong community values of Buderim whilst she looks forward to the future challenges that will confront the local area. ‘It is the people that make the community, and it is people that I care about and want to connect with, to ensure our individual needs are met with a view to protecting OUR future’
