Three People I'd like to have to Dinner - and Why

  1. Nelson Mandela, because of what he endured when in prison and how he moved forward and achieved in life
  2. A homeless peron, to better understand how lucky I actually am.
  3. A quadrapelgic, to better understand how difficult their life actually is and what gives a particular person their specific strength.

Candidate Profile Michael Costigan

My History

I have lived in Caloundra for 37 years and been involved in local community organisations and business for over 30 years. I've been a Member Metropolitan Caloundra SLSC Inc. since 1973, imcluding Club Captain 1986-1989, and am now an Honorary Life Member.

The formation of the new Sunshine Coast Regional Council is a major change from what was until fairly recently, three rural shires. The new Council will be confronted with major issues and challenges and will require Councillors who have the life skills, local knowledge, qualifications and dedication to deal with them in a pro-active manner.

The following major challenges require a new breed of Councillor, if they are to be addressed and solved as required by the Community

• Provision of Affordable Housing

• Increase Public Transport Usage, and introduce a low cost token bus ring service

• Increased Recreational Facilities and no more loss of current facilities

• Council Planning to reflect and enable implementation of above policies.

I am acutely aware of these issues and their affect on local residents, and have the capacity and resolve to deal with them effectively.

I have academic qualifications in business, law, accounting and economics.

My Objectives

• I will promote and organise regular community meetings to discuss and prioritise your concerns

• I will be receptive to your concerns and provide prompt feedback

• I give my total commitment to represent all residents in a consistent and equitable manner

• I will attend all required Council / Sub-Committee meetings or when required to represent the electorate

• I am a team player and will work diligently to ensure a harmonious working relationship with other Councillors

What I want to achieve in Council. My aims in council are focused across four key areas -

• SUSTAINABLE HOUSING - Introduce policies that will encourage and promote development of affordable housing – specifically

  • Council to be more focused on outcomes rather than process
  • Free up or rezone existing land to supply more locations for housing
  • Reduce infrastructure charges and lengthy applications approvals - this would also mean the introduction of policies that will encourage and promote the use of energy conservation and sustainability principles, especially in regards to water, power and traffic

• TRANSPORT - Improved public transport services and to promote the use of public transport by all residents

  • We need an effective transport system incorporating rail and bus that collects, carries and distributes our residents frequently, punctually and cost effectively
  • Cost to passengers for this public transport system should be cheap, cheaper or free

• ENTERTAINMENT / RECREATION - Improved family entertainment and recreational facilities for all Caloundra residents

  • As a community we want NO FURTHER LOSS of established facilities in Caloundra such as Ten Pin Bowling and Clay Pigeon Shooting
  • As residents we DO want the strengthening and maintaining of fishing, bowling, squash, equestrian and all other recreational clubs and facilities that contribute our Caloundra lifestyle
  • I will vote to approve the “Adventura Water Park”  - the development will give Caloundra as well as the Sunshine Coast another iconic destination

• PLANNING / ECONOMIC
- Introduce policies that enable rezoning of specific sites to allow Council approval of a service required by the community
- Introduce policies that will make Council more focus on outcomes rather than process
- Promote policies that will allow the continuation of caravan parks in Caloundra
- We are losing them! We need them so as a community we can continue to promote Caloundra as a family holiday destination that is affordable. Not all holiday makers want unit accommodation. Permanent residents also expect and need security
- Promote approval for more commercial office space in the Caloundra CBD
- Introduce policies that provide savings and discounts to pensioners and the general community if possible
- The viable relocation of Caloundra airport as long as existing tenants and businesses are fully consulted and agree to another site prior to its’ closure
- NO HIGH RISE in the residential suburbs of Shelly, Moffat and Dicky Beaches
- Continued economic development for Caloundra such as the current State Government Industrial Park
- This will ensure that our citizens and children will have the opportunity to secure jobs in Caloundra if they wish

Why I'd be a good Councillor for Division 2
I will bring a fresh perspective and neutral balanced decision making to the familiar and to the new issues facing Caloundra and the new Sunshine Coast Regional Council.

I will listen! I am enthusiastic! I have a positive attitude! I love Caloundra and intend to contribute to its positive future as your new representative
