Candidate Profile Danny O'Kearney

My History

My family and I have been residents of Caloundra for the past 20 years. My family has had long association with the Kawana area through my grandfather and his involvement with Kawana Estates as Chairman of the Board of Directors.

Leaving school after year 10 I worked for three years in advertising before joining the Regular Army. I spent most of my career as an Intelligence Officer and was a member of the SAS. I saw service in both Vietnam and Timor. My combined regular and reserve service amounted to some 36 years.

After leaving the Army I started a small business and left it to become a High School Teacher. I have a BA ,Dip ED and a number of other Tertiary qualifications and last year completed a Grad Cert in Climate Change Adaptation with the University of the Sunshine Coast.

In 2004 I left teaching at Siena College here on the coast to become a Caloundra City Councillor.

The last 4 years has seen many changes in Caloundra City, the City Plan in 2004, Regional Plan and the Local Growth Management Strategy added to the complexities of making sure the coast has a sustainable future.

For most of my working life I have been in a leadership role dealing with both simple and complex problems.

Team work and leadership go hand in hand.

My Objectives

  • Be available to residents.
  • Work in the best interest of the community.
  • Make sure residents are heard in council.
  • Make decisions in the best interest of the majority not just a select few.
  • Make sure the principals of Caloundra's City Plan and LGMS are a foundation stone for development across the coast.
  • Lobby for better public transport.
  • Agitate for more Police on the beat in the Division.
  • Support no development to increase population without the supporting major infrastructure.
