Three People I'd like to have to Dinner - and Why

  1. Wolfgang Mozart. ( I recently watched Amadeus) He'd be a riot!
  2. Pablo Picasso. To see if he could out-do Wolfy!
  3. Andy Warhol, because ... nahh not him. Two outrageous guys are enough. Make it Don Bradman... well, doesn't everyone want him as a dinner guest?

Candidate Profile Phil Mannell

My History

I'm 48 years of age. I have been a Valuer for 18 years including 6 years on the Sunshine Coast.

In the course of my work, I have valued properties in almost all suburbs / localities through the three existing local authorities. This requires a good knowledge of the planning laws.

I have also been a Registered Nurse (lapsed now due to continuing practice requirements).

I have also been a Courier, Rail Worker and Fast Food Industry worker.

I have a Bachelor of Health Administration and Assoc. Diploma of Business.

I am divorced with 2 daughters at Queensland university.

My Objectives

“The Sunshine Coast Regional Council” needs to be more than just a brand name for the administrative body overlooking the diverse range of communities and localities within it’s boundaries.

1. Development of a viable mass transit system on the CAMCOS corridor sooner rather than later is critical. I would like to see the CAMCOS Corridor built including a direct rail link within 2 terms. Commitment by George Street in the first term. I favour passenger rail service to Maroochydore CBD with light rail system to the airport firstly and later to Noosa and linked back to Cooroy, with another service to Nambour. I use the existing bus service about 1 / month, it has improved over recent months and needs our support to grow further.

2. Developers are an interesting breed of people. There are two types; Those who see a project being the means to an end (their own enrichment) and the less common ones that see a development as an end unto itself. The latter can sometimes be more dangerous than the former as they themselves truly believe that what they are doing is “right” and how can the locals not see this! I would call this the “World’s Tallest Building” Syndrome. The people have spoken time and time again, do not relax current height restrictions on the foreshore. I support this. The people need to have a real sense of inclusion in decision making being undertaken. The current Councils have to some degree failed to do this with some projects “getting through” and others failing to do so despite local opposition to the stance taken by Councillors.

Can we stop our population from growing? No, I don’t believe we can. Can we manage that growth? Yes, we can. Should we cap our population? I don’t believe that is really all that workable while the human population continues to grow world wide. That is unless other factors, such as water availability, impede that growth. I intend to support a community based approach to growth and development if elected.

3. I would like to see CCTV monitoring of prime tourist / shopping areas with central monitoring and links to contracted security firms / police. The monitoring room could be sited at the existing Caloundra or Noosa Council Chambers.

4. Improved parking at Mooloolaba and Maroochydore. A recent letter writer to the Sunshine Coast Daily asked why we need to spend money and time on parking facilities. Wouldn’t it be more desirable to encourage less use of private motor vehicles and more use of public transport. In an ideal world with non rushed people he would be right. Despite a good local bus system, public transport is not convenient enough for most people. We have become heavily reliant on the private car. I would like to see the Brisbane Road carpark built, preferably without the help of a developer.
