Candidate Profile Winston Johnston

My History

I have an outstanding track record in local government, in business and in his personal life.

I have an extensive support network of locals in every corner of the Division. I was born in the Division and has been married to Helen (a former Head of Home Economics at Burnside High School for 17 years) for 34 years. I live east of Maleny, and have also lived in Woombye and Landsborough.

Over a period of 15 years I built one of the 3 largest , most successful privately owned Insurance Brokerages in Queensland, winning awards along the way.

Building a large business requires the same skills as building a large Council. I believe no other candidate has those same business building skills. I believe that only a strong negotiator with excellent people skills and the ability to build teamwork will be able to get recognition for the needs of the hinterland in the new Council.

I have a 9 year track record of providing major infrastructure as a Councillor from 1982 to 1991, as a Caloundra City Councillor. (see details at www.winstonjohnston.com.au )

TRACK RECORD

  • 9 years as a Councillor from 1982 -1991.
  • 6 years as Committee Chairman for Planning, Development, Health and Tourism.
  • 6 years on the Caloundra/Maroochy Water Supply Board during construction of the Baroon Pocket Dam.
  • 5 years on the Sunshine Coast Tourism and Development Board
  • 3 years on the Sunshine Coast University Site Planning Committee
  • 3 years on the Maroochy Hospital Board
  • ‘Sunshine Coast Excellence in Business Award’ for my business - ‘Your Insurance Broker’.

My Objectives

It is my objective to build the structures and processes of the new Council to be lasting and efficient. I believe I bring breadth of vision and business know-how to ensure a responsive and visionary Council.

• Keep rates affordable and ensure the best aspects of the 3 existing Council Rating Systems are retained
• Create a Regional standard for Council roads, bridges, parks and community sporting facilities to ensure they are regularly maintained and upgraded as needed
• Support social, sporting, recreational, environmental, cultural and community programs and groups.
• Ensure Council retains existing panoramic views and that the individual character of each town is maintained.
• Work hard to promote harmony and an understanding that individual personal views can be expressed without fear of repercussion.
• Encourage our business leader’s work closely together, to promote prosperity and new jobs within Division 5.
• Provide accessibility to Council officers and myself through regular clinics, which he will conduct for each town.
