Candidate Profile Ken O'Flaherty
My History
My wife Lois and I have been residents of Division 7 for 12 years since moving from Ipswich where I lived for 24 years.
We founded the Buderim Chronicle newspaper in 1997 and successfully managed it together for 10 years until 2007 when we decided to take a new direction.
The Chronicle became a community voice for Buderim and the surrounding districts; now I would like to take it one step further and be your voice in the new Regional Council.
I have been active in almost 20 community organisations, including Rotary (where I received a Paul Harris Fellow for community service), 3 Chambers of Commerce (3 years as president of Buderim), the Buderim War Memorial Community Association (Former president), Board member of the Bloomhill Cancer Centre and Sunshine FM Community Radio, and I am currently on the steering committee to form a community bank for the District.
In my business career, which spans over 30 years in Australia, I have personally negotiated with hundreds of businesses plus members of Federal, State and Local government at the highest levels.
I believe that this expertise and experience will allow me to deal professionally with the many complex and difficult situations that will arise in the early years of the new regional council.
I am not, and never have been, a member of any political party and therefore I am able to represent you without fear or favour.
I am a team player and have spent a great part of my life playing team sports and I understand what makes a great team, both in sport and business.
Our team has to include the Councillors, Council staff and, most importantly, the Community.
My Objectives
My 6 point commitment to the Sunshine Coast community is:
1. I will consult with, and listen to, residents across the region, with particular emphasis on Division 7, to promote increased community consultation via community forums.
2. I will insist on open, accountable and transparent governance and the application of sound business ethics and practices to the Councils finances.
3. I will insist that all development is properly planned and sustainable with particular regard to our fragile environment.
4. I will aim to provide leadership that is community driven and support a cohesive attitude between all councillors and council staff and the community.
5. I will tackle the issues of roads, traffic problems, public transport, affordable housing, employment, education, community facilities and long term infrastructure planning to attract clean industry, all without fear or favour.
6. I will make myself available 24/7 via mobile, email and website – and I will return your calls!
